Breaking: Rivers LG Chairmen Bow Out, Surrender Power To Councils’ Heads —What’s Next?

Despite initial tensions, reports indicate that the transition process was peaceful across all local government areas, with no incidents of resistance.

In Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the home LGA of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, some residents reportedly rejoiced over the removal of Chairman Amb. Chinwo Ihunwo.

Confirming his resignation, Ihunwo stated that he had formally transferred authority to Sam Ichechi Amadi, the HLGA, in compliance with the Supreme Court ruling and the governor’s directive.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve and contribute to the growth of Obio/Akpor LGA. I look forward to seeing Mr. Amadi’s leadership make a positive impact,” Ihunwo said.

Similarly, the sacked Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Ezebunwo Ichemati, handed over power to HLGA Clifford Paul.

Acknowledging the continuity of governance, Ichemati expressed confidence in the HLGA’s ability to effectively manage council affairs.

“As a people, we understand that government is a continuous process, and the HLGA, alongside other principal officers, will ensure the council’s smooth operation,” he stated.

Reflecting on his tenure, Ichemati highlighted his administration’s efforts in fostering local development and improved service delivery.

“Though our time in office was short, we introduced a fresh perspective to governance and positively impacted lives,” he added.

The former Port Harcourt LG chairman credited Governor Fubara for creating a supportive work environment that enabled him and his colleagues to fulfill their campaign promises.

He expressed deep appreciation to the people of Port Harcourt for their support, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration for a better future.

“To my supporters, I am grateful for your trust and encouragement. Let us continue to strengthen our bond as we look ahead,” Paul remarked.
