The crisis has sparked widespread concern, with reports suggesting that funeral homes and crematoriums are struggling to handle the increased number of deaths, drawing comparisons to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While Chinese health officials have yet to confirm the cause, local reports point to human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which is known to cause cold-like symptoms, as a possible culprit. However, experts say the situation closely mirrors the 2022-2023 “white lung” outbreak, which saw a dramatic rise in pneumonia cases among children who had weakened immune systems due to prolonged lockdowns and school closures.

According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), seasonal flu appears to be driving the current surge. Recent reports indicate that influenza is responsible for 30% of all positive tests, with 1 in 7 hospitalized patients testing positive for the virus.

As the number of cases rises, videos from Hunan province and other regions show hospitals overwhelmed by patients. A farmer from Hunan, Mr. Peng, shared that many people in his area have fallen ill, with several fatalities reported among the elderly.
Funeral workers are also sounding alarms, with one director describing an unsettling scene of long lines at crematoriums, which have been working at full capacity.

A Chinese video blogger, known as “Please Fei Ge,” shared his personal battle with illness, comparing his symptoms to those experienced during the height of the pandemic. He urged people to wear masks in crowded places, echoing the fears that the outbreak could spiral further out of control.
This surge in illnesses comes amid a return of concerns about disease outbreaks in China, with similar patterns seen in previous years after pandemic restrictions were lifted.
