Speaking at a civic reception in Port Harcourt on Friday, Wike responded to the resurfacing of old social media videos, in which former First Lady Patience Jonathan introduced him as the preferred candidate to succeed Rotimi Amaechi. These videos reignited debates surrounding Wike’s political journey, especially in light of tensions between Wike and current Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike compared his political trajectory with Fubara’s, declaring that it was he who had installed Fubara as the state’s governor. Wike also criticized former Governor Peter Odili for supporting Fubara in the ongoing political rift, accusing him of failing to act as a neutral figure in the dispute.

“I fought for the party structure to become Governor in 2014. I took it from Magnus Abe, and no one gave it to me. You can’t say I was handed the governorship,” Wike declared, reaffirming that while he appreciated support, it was his effort that secured his rise to power.

He further asserted, “It would be unfair to say nobody supported me, but no one can claim that they gave me the position.”

These comments come amid mounting political drama, with the rift between Wike, Odili, and Fubara intensifying.
