Major Money Laundering Scandal Unveiled: Court Freezes Accounts, Arrests In Motion
A major crackdown on suspected money laundering has resulted in the freezing of 21 bank accounts by an Abuja court, with a directive for the immediate arrest of the account holders. The decision came after the Inspector-General of Police’s lawyer, Ibrahim Mohammed,
made an urgent application to the court on Friday.
In a landmark ruling, Judge Emeka Nwite granted the motion, instructing banks to block all withdrawals, including ATM transactions, though deposits will still be allowed during the investigation. The court also set a 90-day investigation window to scrutinize the accounts, believed to be linked to illicit financial activities.
The case involves several prominent Nigerian banks, including Access Bank, Sterling Bank, Wema Bank, Fidelity Bank, and Zenith Bank. Authorities suspect the accounts may be tied to fraud or other illegal operations.
Judge Nwite explained: “After reviewing the affidavit and hearing submissions from the applicant’s counsel, I find the motion to be justified and grant the application, with the condition that the investigation period is limited to 90 days.”
The police’s investigation centers around a fraudulent business deal between two partners and the Nigerian Navy, where a company, Indetix Limited, was involved. The dispute escalated when one partner attempted to alter the profit-sharing agreement from 15% to 7.5%. The other partner reportedly removed them from the joint account and moved large sums to various other accounts in what is believed to be an attempt to cover up illegal transactions, including funds meant for purchasing boat engines.
The case is set to be reviewed on April 3, 2025, as authorities continue to probe the tangled web of financial misconduct.
