Energy Disaster: Vandals Destroy Shiroro-Katampe Line, Blackout Fears Grow In Abuja
Power outages have hit several parts of Abuja following the recent sabotage of the 330-kilovolt Shiroro-Katampe Transmission Line by vandals. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident in a statement….Energy Disaster: Vandals Destroy Shiroro-Katampe Line, Blackout Fears Grow In Abuja
on Thursday evening.
The attack occurred late on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, around 11:43 PM, causing a disruption in the power supply to the national grid. TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah explained that the vandals had stolen a section of the power conductor located between towers T216 and T218.
A TCN maintenance crew has already been dispatched to the site, working around the clock to replace the damaged infrastructure. However, Mbah did not specify a timeline for the restoration of power.
“Upon investigation, our patrol team found that vandals had removed a portion of the conductor between towers T216 and T218,” Mbah stated. “Our maintenance team is on-site, and we expect power to be restored soon.”
The impact of the outage is widespread, with several key areas in Abuja, including the CBN Headquarters, Ecumenical Centre, Bank of Industry, and New Chelsea Hotel, among others, affected. Neighborhoods such as Katsina-Ala, Kila Close, and Rudolf Close are also facing extended blackouts.
This incident comes after similar vandalism in March 2024, when the Shiroro-Kaduna line was targeted multiple times, highlighting a troubling pattern of power infrastructure attacks.
As the city braces for further disruptions, Abuja residents await swift action to restore electricity and avoid a looming power crisis.
