Speaking at an event in Abuja on Thursday, Oyedele shared insights into the ongoing debates surrounding the tax reforms, which have sparked significant opposition, particularly from the northern region. He explained that the contents of the bills were shaped by extensive discussions within the committee, rather than being influenced by any external forces.

“The backlash is real—especially on social media. People curse me and my family, but I don’t take it personally,” Oyedele said. “I read through the comments and focus on constructive feedback. This is public service—you’re not here to be applauded all the time. It’s about accountability and making decisions for the greater good.”

The tax reform bills have stirred up intense debates, but Oyedele stressed that the committee’s approach was collaborative and inclusive. “We engaged a wide range of stakeholders, including people with disabilities, and representatives from all geopolitical zones,” he explained. “We didn’t have any influence from outside bodies like the World Bank, IMF, or government officials. Everything in the bills is a product of national debates.”

Despite the ongoing controversy, Oyedele is committed to continuing dialogue. “Engagements must go on, even if the bills are passed. Every suggestion will be carefully considered, and if superior reasoning emerges, we’ll gladly adopt it. Our sole agenda is Nigeria’s progress.”
