Funke Akindele Claps Back At Critics Dragging Her ‘Dancing’ Movie Promotions

According to Ireporter Online, acclaimed filmmaker Funke Akindele has commented on film promotion strategies in Nigeria following remarks by fellow filmmaker Kunle Afolayan. Afolayan had recently voiced his frustrations over the promotional demands placed on creators, particularly the expectation to engage in dance routines to market films. He described the process as exhausting, stating, “It is draining. I want to make a film if you guarantee me that I don’t have to dance to sell that film.”

Afolayan further criticised the focus on box office numbers, noting that high cinema attendance is of little value if filmmakers do not see financial benefits. “There’s no competition. I don’t want two billion in cinema, or even one billion, if I won’t make ten million from it,” he added.

In response, Akindele shared her perspective on Instagram, highlighting that opportunities exist for everyone and encouraging creators to focus on their own paths rather than being distracted by others’ success. She advised, “If you can’t beat them or join them, create your own path. Don’t allow jealousy to hold you back. The sky is big enough for everybody to fly. Go ahead and create alternative promotion or marketing strategies for your business, or hire a company to handle it. You can do it! Opportunities are endless, and everyone has their own path. I’m focused on mine, and I have faith in God’s plan for me.”
