Lagos Butchers Decry Surge In Cow Prices, Warn Of Meat Shortage

number of cows slaughtered in the state has dropped from 5,000 to 3,000, with several factors contributing to the decline. These include economic challenges, the impact of the Boko Haram insurgency, inflation, and escalating costs of living.

Kazeem explained that in the past, a cow could be purchased for ₦400,000 to ₦500,000, but now the prices have surged by over three times. This price hike, alongside issues like banditry and farmer-herder conflicts, has further reduced cattle production, affecting the beef supply in Lagos.

He also pointed to environmental factors, such as heat stress, which impact cattle health and production. Kazeem is urging both the state government and industry stakeholders to collaborate in addressing the challenges and ensuring a stable and sustainable beef industry in the state.
