Lagos Moves to Unify School Calendar, Third-Term Break Now Mandatory
The Lagos State Government is set to release an officially approved academic calendar for all schools within two weeks, following the adoption of a harmonised timetable across the state’s education system.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Education Resource Centre, Ojodu, aimed at finalising the academic calendar for the 2025/2026 session.
According to a statement by Adepeju Adeyemi of the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), the unified calendar will promote consistency in academic planning and eliminate discrepancies between schools.
Alli-Balogun reiterated the state’s commitment to the welfare of teachers, stressing the importance of enforcing a mandatory two-month third-term break to give teachers time for rest, planning, and family life.
“Our teachers deserve time to recharge and reflect,” the commissioner said. “School programmes must not infringe on this well-deserved break. That culture must stop.”
The proposed harmonisation reflects Lagos’ push to improve educational quality and coordination across public and private institutions.
