The transfer involved four Napoli players who never played for Lille, raising concerns regarding the actual value of the transaction.

“The net amount we received, after accounting for the purchase of the player, the four players included who were valued at €20 million but contributed nothing, intermediaries, and commissions, was around €7 million,” Letang explained during an interview with L’Equipe TV.

This revelation comes as authorities in Italy and France investigate the circumstances surrounding the transfer, although Napoli has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

“Napoli has already faced scrutiny from two levels of the judicial system that cleared the club and its directors, finding no irregularities,” stated club lawyer Mattia Grassani last year.

He highlighted Napoli’s clean record, remarking, “They are the only club where the Prosecutor did not seek to revoke the judgment, which subsequently resulted in Juventus receiving a 15-point and then a 10-point penalty in Serie A.”

Letang, who took over as Lille’s President shortly after Osimhen’s exit, has shed light on the intricate financial details of the deal that brought the Nigerian striker to Italy.

The transfer was a significant milestone in Osimhen’s career, which began in the challenging surroundings of Lagos’ Olusosun community. After shining at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup and winning the Golden Boot with a record ten goals, he moved to Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.

Following a tough period in Germany, he found success at Charleroi in Belgium before joining Lille in 2019, where he scored 18 goals in 38 matches across all competitions.

His transfer to Napoli proved transformative for both the player and the club. The 25-year-old striker scored 76 goals in 133 matches for the Partenopei, playing a pivotal role in their 33-year wait for the Serie A title in 2023. Osimhen also won the Serie A Golden Boot and became the highest-scoring African player in Italian top-flight history, surpassing George Weah’s previous record of 46 goals.

Osimhen, who was named the 2023 CAF African Footballer of the Year, is currently on loan at Turkish club Galatasaray, continuing his impressive form with 10 goals and five assists in 14 appearances.

Although he is under contract with Napoli until 2026, the striker’s future remains uncertain due to clauses in his contract that could facilitate a permanent transfer as early as January or during the summer.

His tenure in Naples has been marked by consistent goal-scoring and a historic Scudetto victory, but this latest disclosure about his transfer fee adds another layer to the complex relationship between the player and the Italian club.
