Major Announcement: Tinubu Government Launches National Broadband Alliance To Boost Internet Connectivity Nationwide

The Federal Government has launched the National Broadband Alliance (NBAN), a major initiative aimed at improving digital infrastructure and broadening internet connectivity throughout Nigeria. The announcement was made on Tuesday in Lagos, with the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, represented by Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Tijani praised the remarkable growth in broadband coverage, which rose from 6% in 2015 to about 42% by October 2024. However, he emphasized that there is still much work to be done, particularly to ensure underserved regions can access high-speed internet.

As part of this effort, the government is deploying a 90,000 km fibre optic network through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), designed to connect rural communities and close the digital gap.

Aligning with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

Tijani stressed that this initiative is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on leveraging innovation, technology, and strategic partnerships to drive national progress.

He added that improved broadband access would open up opportunities for education, business expansion, and digital inclusion, especially in remote areas.

“While we are proud of the progress in broadband access, we recognize that we must do more to ensure every Nigerian can benefit from reliable, high-speed internet,” Tijani said.

Collaborative Efforts for Broadband Growth

The Minister also pointed out the importance of collaborations with investors, donors, and other stakeholders to address infrastructure challenges and lower broadband costs.

The government’s broadband targets include:

• 70% broadband penetration by 2025
• A minimum internet speed of 25 Mbps in urban areas
• Broadband availability for 80% of the population by 2027

“Achieving these targets will require more than just the private sector’s efforts. We need a collaborative approach, with key partnerships in infrastructure development,” Tijani concluded.
