Reports indicate that the couple was returning from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry at the time of the incident.

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed that the accident resulted from a brake failure on a commercial LT bus, which collided with a mini truck.

According to Taofiq, the mini truck, with the license plate ‘AGL 22 YE’, was struck by the LT bus, registered as ‘BFG 204 XF’. The bus reportedly lost control after its brakes failed, crashing into the mini truck, which was moving slowly due to mechanical issues.

Taofiq stated, “The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, in conjunction with emergency response teams, successfully rescued 18 individuals involved in the serious accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, near Ilaje, heading towards Iyana Oworonsoki.

“Among the injured were a newlywed couple returning from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry. The collision involved a mini truck (AGL 22 YE) and a commercial LT bus (BFG 204 XF). The incident resulted from a brake failure in the LT bus, which was traveling at high speed, leading to the crash with the slower mini truck.

“A total of 16 passengers seated in the rear of the LT bus—11 women and 5 men—sustained significant injuries and were promptly taken to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre near the Toll Gate on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for immediate medical assistance.”

Additionally, two passengers were trapped in the wreckage of the LT bus, suffering severe injuries. They were extricated through the collaborative efforts of LASTMA personnel, emergency responders, and bystanders and were subsequently transported to Gbagada General Hospital for further treatment.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the victims and wished them a quick recovery. He emphasized the importance of drivers adhering to speed limits and ensuring their vehicles—especially the braking systems—are well-maintained to prevent such accidents.

Bakare-Oki also highlighted LASTMA’s ongoing safety campaign managed by the Female Elite Corps, aimed at educating drivers, particularly commercial bus operators, on safe driving practices as the festive season approaches.

Emergency responders—including LASTMA staff, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police Force—responded quickly to restore order on the busy bridge and evacuate the injured.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder for drivers to regularly maintain their vehicles, drive responsibly, and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent future accidents on Lagos roads.
