The controversial suggestion was made by Dokun Olumofin, who submitted a formal letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, advocating for the tax to apply to all Nigerians and tourists traveling back to Nigeria between November and January.

In a statement issued on January 15, 2025, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols at NIDCOM, condemned the proposal, arguing that it would discourage many Nigerians in the diaspora from visiting home during the festive period. Balogun emphasized that such a move would undermine the Commission’s ongoing efforts to encourage Nigerians abroad to visit, invest, and support their country.

NIDCOM pointed out that while other nations are lowering barriers to attract tourists and investment, Olumofin’s suggestion would impose additional costs and raise unnecessary obstacles for Nigeria. The Commission also highlighted the substantial contributions of the Nigerian diaspora, noting that in 2024, remittances reached record levels, with significant investments in various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Furthermore, NIDCOM criticized the proposal as an attempt to tarnish the country’s image and hinder its economic progress. The Commission also expressed concern that enforcing such a tax would likely encourage corruption, undermining the government’s efforts to foster a more inclusive and prosperous environment for diaspora Nigerians.

The Commission reiterated that the government should focus on improving essential infrastructure, such as security and transportation, as part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which would naturally support increased diaspora engagement. NIDCOM also praised the Lagos State government for creating a welcoming environment for both tourists and diasporans, encouraging other states to follow suit to boost the country’s tourism and entertainment sectors.
