Tension Rises in Anambra as NLC Holds Key to Moghalu’s Guber Ambition

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that it will make a decision regarding the recognition of George Moghalu as the Labour Party’s candidate for the upcoming Anambra governorship election.

On Tuesday, the NLC’s Political Commission (NLCPC) revealed it is awaiting a formal stance from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concerning the ongoing leadership dispute within the Labour Party.

According to The Nation, the Commission’s Acting Chairman, Professor Theophilus Ndubaku, voiced concern over INEC’s delay in acting upon the recent Supreme Court ruling.

It should be recalled that the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party conducted the party’s primary election in Anambra. Although INEC previously denied recognizing Abure’s leadership, it proceeded to list George Moghalu—nominated through Abure’s camp—as the party’s official candidate for the November 8 gubernatorial poll.

This move has drawn suspicion from the faction loyal to the LP’s Acting National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, who questioned INEC’s neutrality.

“As law-abiding citizens, we’re waiting for INEC to make its position clear,” Ndubaku said. “Following the Supreme Court’s verdict, we wrote to the commission, and they told us they were reviewing the ruling.”

He added that the uncertainty surrounding INEC’s decision is one of the reasons the NLC has postponed its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

Regarding Moghalu’s candidacy, Ndubaku emphasized that the NLC would determine its position once INEC’s final decision is made public:
“We haven’t seen the details yet. Once we do, we’ll respond accordingly,” he said.
