During the 22nd Annual Thanksgiving Service of the Lagos State House of Assembly, themed “The Voice of Mercy,” Obasa acknowledged the challenges Nigerians have faced over the past year but encouraged them to remain optimistic.
“The past year has been particularly difficult, especially given the country’s economic climate. However, we find hope in the commitment of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to guide us toward a brighter future,” Obasa stated.
“Mr. President is actively working to bring joy to our lives. I assure you, help is on the way. Let us keep our spirits high,” he continued.
The event attracted numerous distinguished guests, including government officials, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), traditional leaders, and guest speakers.
Drawing from various biblical passages, Obasa stressed the importance of gratitude, urging Nigerians to acknowledge God’s mercy and faithfulness despite life’s hardships.
“In these trying times, when the world can feel overwhelming and uncertain, it is essential to remember the enduring messages of mercy and grace that are always present in our lives. Through God’s mercy, we gain strength, comfort, and renewal,” he emphasized.
He also encouraged Nigerians to practice mercy towards one another, highlighting the importance of empathy and compassion within the community.
“Let us recognize God’s sovereignty and mercy in our lives, understanding that our achievements are not solely due to our efforts, but rather reflections of God’s compassion and mercy,” Obasa remarked.
Most Rev. Isaac Ayo Olawuyi, the Archbishop of the Methodist Church Nigeria (Lagos), delivered the sermon, calling for Nigerians to extend mercy and kindness to one another in accordance with God’s teachings.
“When God’s mercy is upon you, all obstacles can be overcome. By His mercy, we receive forgiveness for our sins. Our nation is in need of God’s mercy, and it is through this mercy that we can surmount our challenges,” the Archbishop said.
He encouraged attendees to reflect on how they help others and to spread love and mercy within their communities.
Archbishop Olawuyi also commended Speaker Obasa for his inclusive leadership style and his efforts to foster collaboration among the different branches of government, which he recognized as crucial to Lagos State’s stability.
“You have demonstrated true leadership with compassion, and I pray that God continues to guide you in making Lagos a better place while granting you your heart’s desires,” he stated, also praising President Tinubu for his initiatives thus far.
In concluding his sermon, the Archbishop advocated for religious inclusivity in Lagos State’s leadership. He suggested that the upcoming 2027 elections should consider electing a Muslim governor, emphasizing the importance of religious tolerance.
“We should also bear in mind our religious representation in Lagos State leadership. After 12 years of Christian governors, it’s time to give our Muslim brothers the opportunity to lead us effectively,” he said.
The event concluded with prayers for Lagos State, Nigeria, and President Tinubu’s administration as citizens anticipate a more hopeful future.
