Yerima Identifies Issues Fueling Northern Opposition To Tax Reform Bills

In an interview with Saturday Vanguard, Yerima highlighted key flaws in the government’s approach, emphasizing inadequate consultation, a lack of transparency, and insufficient public involvement as major barriers to garnering support for the proposed reforms.

Addressing the reasons for the North’s opposition to the bills, Yerima stated, “The perception of the tax reform bills varies among individuals and specific interests. However, the government could have executed this process better. The concept is valid, especially when considering the current circumstances; no country can overlook taxation, even when things are going well.”

He added, “This presents a significant opportunity for generating funds for development. The manner in which the bills were introduced has been problematic, resulting in the Northern reaction being misconstrued as anti-tax reform. The issue has been politicized, casting it as anti-North.”

Yerima suggested that improved consultation could have alleviated these tensions. He urged the government to engage more with the National Assembly, allowing elected representatives to return to their constituencies and communicate with their constituents.

“This approach would lend the bill the legitimacy it deserves. I’m pleased to see that there is now an understanding between the executive and the lawmakers. The lawmakers have agreed to seek further consultation in their constituencies. I believe only a few adjustments will be necessary before the bill is passed. The controversy surrounding it was largely unwarranted.
