Victor Osimhen has been named the main assistant captain of the Super Eagles, signaling a major leadership change as Nigeria gear up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Galatasaray striker will deputize for newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi and assume responsibility as the team’s primary penalty taker.

The leadership shift comes following the international retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong, who previously served as the team’s skipper and first-choice penalty taker. Ndidi’s appointment as captain was officially confirmed on December 19, 2025.
