Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Public Communication, referred to Obasanjo as a man with “a tremendous capacity for mischief,” while Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, described his comments as part of a recurring habit of belittling every administration that follows his own.

In his recent address, Obasanjo used the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University as a platform to lambast the leadership of both President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu, even labeling the latter “Emilokan.” The former president also painted Nigeria as a “failing” nation, despite the fact that his tenure was marked by several challenges in governance.

The Presidency further criticized Obasanjo for his hypocrisy, pointing out his role in controversial political actions during his time in office. Among the examples cited was the 2004 incident where renowned author Chinua Achebe rejected a national honor awarded by Obasanjo, citing corruption, abuse of power, and mismanagement of public resources during Obasanjo’s presidency.

The Presidency also highlighted Obasanjo’s failure to address key infrastructure and economic issues during his time in office, arguing that the problems Nigeria faces today are the result of poor choices made during his leadership.

Furthermore, the statement criticized Obasanjo’s handling of security, his failed privatization programs, and his controversial actions regarding national assets, citing the sale of ALSCON and the billions spent on the country’s power sector without any significant improvements.
