Tragedy was narrowly averted in Gusau, Zamfara State, when a Chief Correctional Assistant, Abdullahi Nura, attempted to take his own life by plunging into the Gusau Dam, one of the state’s deepest water bodies.

Nura, who serves at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Gusau, reportedly left home under the guise of heading to work but instead diverted to the dam. He arrived at the location after being dropped off by a commercial motorcyclist.

In a statement issued by the Zamfara Correctional Service Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Abubakar, it was revealed that Nura jumped into the dam without saying a word. The startled Okada rider immediately raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby security personnel and passersby who rushed to the scene.

Emergency responders managed to rescue him alive, noting that he was still dressed in his uniform and had his official ID card pressed to his chest.

Upon being pulled from the water, Nura was quickly taken to the MSCC medical clinic where he is currently receiving care. Officials confirmed that he has since regained consciousness and is in stable condition.

While the reason behind the attempted suicide remains unknown, the Correctional Service has assured the public that Nura is being monitored closely and receiving the necessary support for his recovery.
