Governor Sule’s Aide Highlights Regional Imbalance In Tax Bills Rejected By Northern States

Peter Ahemba, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, announced that the North opposes the contentious tax reform bills, asserting they favor southern states disproportionately. In a discussion in Lafia with Punch, Ahemba emphasized that halting the bills is a “collective responsibility” shared by all political leaders in northern Nigeria.
He stated, “It is evident that senators and House of Representatives members from the North are united on this issue. The Northern Governors Forum has made its position clear, urging the President to withdraw the tax reform bills for further consultation.”
Ahemba expressed concern that the proposed tax reforms would primarily benefit southern regions, such as Lagos, while undermining northern states. He urged the President to engage in broader consultations to address these concerns and enhance understanding of the bills in the North.
Maiwada Danmallam, Director General of Media for Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, remarked that it is premature for governors to comment on the bills before they undergo public debate. He noted, “We should wait to see the final form of the bills before drawing conclusions. The rejection stemmed from controversial clauses, so if the presidency addresses these issues, we will have to observe how things develop.”
Additionally, Prof. John Ngamsa, Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy to Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, indicated that his governor has not yet taken a definitive stance on the bills. Ngamsa commented, “While the governor supports revenue generation for development, he is also considering potential adverse effects on his constituents and will advise the National Assembly on necessary amendments.
