House Of Representatives Vows Corrective Action On Tax Laws Amid Public Scrutiny

The House of Representatives has affirmed that necessary corrective actions will be taken where procedural or administrative refinements are required in the implementation of recent tax laws.

According to reports, the House, through its spokesman Akintunde Rotimi, stated that the leadership of the National Assembly has directed the Clerk to re-gazette four key tax laws recently passed by both chambers. Rotimi emphasized that the review of these laws is being conducted in strict compliance with established parliamentary procedures and the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The laws under review include the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2025, and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025. Public commentary had highlighted concerns regarding the harmonization of Bills between the Senate and House of Representatives, documentation submitted for Presidential assent, and the versions of the Acts subsequently published in the Official Gazette.

In response, the House has constituted a seven-member Ad Hoc Committee to examine the legislative and administrative handling of the Acts. The committee, in collaboration with other relevant National Assembly Committees and management, is reviewing the sequence of events, identifying any lapses or irregularities, and ensuring the process aligns with constitutional and statutory requirements.

The leadership, including the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, and the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, has instructed the re-gazetting of the Acts and the issuance of Certified True Copies to accurately reflect the decisions of both chambers.

The House stressed that the review focuses solely on institutional processes and does not suggest any defect in legislative authority. It also maintains that the exercise respects the powers of other government arms and does not interfere with ongoing legal or constitutional rights.

Rotimi assured Nigerians that the House remains committed to transparency, accountability, and upholding the principles of constitutionalism, separation of powers, and the rule of law. Appropriate corrective measures will be undertaken where necessary, and the public is urged to allow the process to unfold without speculation.
