Obasanjo made these remarks in chapter six of his new book, Nigeria: Past and Future, which was unveiled during his 88th birthday celebration. He also condemned the Tinubu administration for spending ₦21 billion on a new official residence for Vice President Kashim Shettima despite the country’s economic struggles.

Assessing Tinubu’s two years in office, Obasanjo accused Nigerian leaders of being ill-prepared, self-centered, and focused on personal enrichment rather than national development. He claimed that many top officials use their positions to amass wealth, leaving Nigeria in worsening poverty.

Obasanjo further alleged that state resources are being captured for personal gain, with leaders misleading the public about contract awards, agreements, and borrowing. He described the Lagos-Calabar road and the vice president’s residence project as examples of government waste and corruption, stating that Tinubu has ignored public outcry over these issues.
