Salihu Lukman Calls For APC To Enforce Code Of Conduct For Leaders Amid Yahaya Bello Controversies
In a recent interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today,’ Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), advocated for the implementation of a code of conduct for leaders and elected officials within the ruling party. Lukman’s call for such measures comes in light of ongoing controversies involving figures like former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello….READ ALSO Daniel Bwala Calls For EFCC Reform, Criticizes Chairman’s Handling Of Yahaya Bello Case
Lukman stressed the urgent need for the APC to establish clear guidelines and standards for its leaders to uphold integrity and trust within the party. He lamented the current state of affairs within the APC, noting a decline in functional integrity and the emergence of what he termed “disastrous” elected representatives.
The former National Vice Chairman attributed this decline in party integrity partly to the failure of party organs to convene regularly and address critical matters. Lukman highlighted the contrast between the present situation and the proactive approach taken by the party before the 2015 election, where the national caucus convened almost weekly.
Expressing concerns over the lack of leadership under Abdullahi Ganduje’s tenure as the APC’s national chairman, Lukman pointed out the absence of a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting eight months into Ganduje’s leadership. He emphasized the importance of such meetings in shaping the direction of the party and addressing internal challenges.
Lukman also addressed corruption allegations against Ganduje in Kano, suggesting that these issues stem from political conflicts, particularly Ganduje’s fallout with Rabiu Kwankwaso, leading to Kwankwaso’s exit from the APC. He urged Ganduje to work towards renegotiating relationships within the party to resolve these conflicts.
The ongoing prosecution of Yahaya Bello by the EFCC on charges related to alleged misappropriation of funds further highlights the internal challenges within the APC, according to Lukman.
In conclusion, Lukman’s call for a code of conduct and his critiques of the APC’s leadership underscore the need for internal reforms to restore integrity and trust within the party, especially amidst ongoing controversies and challenges.
