Stay And Build: Goodluck Jonathan Urges Nigerians To Embrace Hope Amid Crisis

Speaking in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State over the weekend, Jonathan made these remarks during the inauguration of the Soybean Plant and Refinery of the CSS Group. The event also coincided with the birthday celebration of Prof. John Kennedy Opara, the former Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC).

The former president emphasized the importance of collective efforts in building Nigeria and discouraged the rising trend of emigration, commonly known as “Japa.” He stated, “You don’t need to Japa. The countries people are running to were built by their citizens. We must also build this nation, invest in it, and create opportunities for our youth.”

Several dignitaries were in attendance, including Sierra Leone’s former President Ernest Bai Koroma, Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri, former Cross River State Governor Prof. Ben Ayade, and former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen. Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule was represented by his deputy.

Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri echoed Jonathan’s sentiments, asserting, “Nigeria is a blessed country. There is hope here. Let us harness private sector contributions to prevent the need for emigration.”

In his remarks, African Development Bank (AfDB) President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina highlighted the urgent need to address food insecurity in Nigeria. He pointed out the severe impact of inflation on food prices and called for decisive measures to boost food production and support local farmers.

Adesina revealed that the AfDB and its partners are implementing a $538 million program to develop special agro-industrial processing zones in eight states, with plans to expand to all 28 remaining states in a second phase targeting $1 billion in funding.

Sierra Leone’s former President Koroma also expressed optimism, stating, “Africa thrives when Nigeria thrives. Positive changes here will benefit the entire continent.”

Jonathan concluded by calling on Nigerians to adopt love and unity as guiding principles, urging everyone to remain committed to the collective task of nation-building.
