During a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, January 9, Tinubu described the current currency swap as insufficient, stating that an expansion would greatly benefit Nigeria’s economic growth.

Additionally, President Tinubu called for an upward revision of the $50 billion aid package for Africa, announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping. He highlighted Africa’s pressing infrastructure needs and appealed for China’s support in Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Expressing gratitude, Tinubu commended China for its contributions to Africa’s development and for its swift response to the recent earthquake in Tibet, offering condolences to the victims.

In response, Wang Yi thanked Tinubu for appointing a Director General and Global Liaison to oversee Nigeria-China relations and reiterated China’s commitment to Africa. He affirmed China’s support for Nigeria’s potential membership in BRICS and pledged continued collaboration in trade, investment, and infrastructure development.

This meeting underscores the growing significance of Nigeria-China relations and paves the way for deeper cooperation in advancing mutual economic and strategic interests.
