Despite the warning, Haruna, also known as Lagwatsani, reportedly attacked the Imam with a sharp knife during ablution, causing severe injuries. The injured Imam was rushed to Murtala Muhammed Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead by medical professionals.
In response to the incident reported by Musa Yunusa on December 31, 2023, at Jakarta Police Division Kano, the police intervened and prevented Lagwatsani from being harmed by an enraged mob. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody.
During court proceedings, the prosecutor, Fatima Ado-Ahmad, emphasized that the defendant stabbed the Imam around 7 p.m., leading to his untimely demise.
Despite the denial of the offense by the defendant, the prosecutor argued that the act contravened Section 221 of the Penal Code.
Chief Magistrate Binta Ibrahim-Galadanchi ordered the remand of the defendant in a Correctional Centre, adjourning the matter until January 31 for further mention.
In a related development, Haruna Sani, Yusuf’s father, faced the Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly concealing his son’s whereabouts in connection with the Imam Sani Mohammed murder.
Haruna Sani, residing in Tudun Nufawa Quarters, is charged with screening an offender under Section 167 of the Penal Code.
The prosecution, represented by Ado-Ahmad, alleged that the defendant hid his son Yusuf after the fatal stabbing of Mohammed on December 31, 2023. The defendant pleaded not guilty, and the prosecution objected to the bail application.
In response, the defense counsel, Ahmad Rufa’i, sought bail for the defendant based on constitutional and legal provisions. Chief Magistrate Binta Ibrahim-Galadanchi ordered the defendant’s remand in a Correctional Center and scheduled the matter for a ruling on the bail application on January 31.
