Trust Crisis Plagues Humanitarian Ministry, Says Minister Tanko Sununu
The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Tanko Sununu, has acknowledged that the biggest hurdle in his ministry is a widespread lack of trust from the public. Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Sununu emphasized that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains deeply committed to enhancing transparency in its humanitarian efforts.
In a candid conversation, Sununu revealed that the ministry has made significant strides to ensure that aid reaches the intended recipients, with corruption being a major concern in the past. He outlined a collaborative approach with the World Bank, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to introduce stringent measures for transparency.
“We are now focusing on accountability by leveraging digital identities for all beneficiaries. No one will receive palliative support without a verified digital ID, linked to their bank account and BVN. We understand some may not have digital identities yet, but we are working swiftly with NIMC and other agencies to resolve this issue,” Sununu said.
This initiative, according to Sununu, will ensure that the distribution of aid is traceable and credible, with concrete evidence to validate any claims of empowerment. As part of his assurance, Sununu emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering on its humanitarian mandate and vowed that reforms would continue to strengthen the system.
Highlighting the government’s focus on addressing the trust deficit, Sununu noted that the President’s decision to appoint two ministers to oversee the ministry ensures better oversight and strengthens the administration’s relationship with the people.
“We are determined to change the narrative that the ministry is just a pipeline. With reforms underway, our goal is to create a more robust system that can cushion the effects of ongoing policy changes and provide tangible support to Nigerians,” Sununu added.
