Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the subsidy at the launch of the 2024 Hajj airlift, explaining that President Bola Tinubu ordered the subsidy due to Nigeria’s economic situation. Critics argue that this allocation ignores pressing needs in education, health, and social welfare.
Professor Hyginus Ekwuazi, former Vice-Chancellor of Dominican University, labeled the subsidy a gross misplacement of priority. Academic Staff Union of Universities President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, indicated the union would review government-sponsored pilgrimages before making an official statement.
Legal experts, including Senior Advocate of Nigeria Chief Awa Kalu, argued that subsidizing religious activities is not the government’s responsibility. Human rights lawyer Festus Ogun called it a constitutional and moral aberration, while lawyer Malcolm Omirhobo deemed the move unconstitutional and discriminatory.
This controversy highlights the ongoing debate over government spending priorities in Nigeria.
