Why Nigerians Should Stop Blaming Judges For Delays In Justice Dispensation – Appeal Court Judge

Binta Zubairu, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, emphasized on Sunday in Zaria that judges are not the cause of delays in the dispensation of justice, as some Nigerians mistakenly believe.

Mrs. Zubairu made this statement on the sidelines of a reception held in her honor in Zaria, celebrating her recent elevation as a Justice of the Court.

Judges are unfairly accused of being responsible for delays in delivering justice, according to the public.

“Judges work as a team with the prosecution, lawyers, and others. Speedy dispensation of justice requires prompt efforts from the police, prosecution, the organization of exhibits by lawyers, and their correct presentation before the judges in court, in accordance with the laws.

“Most of the time, the judges or magistrates are ready to adjudicate, but the prosecution may not be prepared, or the lawyers may come up with one excuse or another.

“These are facts that are evident in the courts, but because we judges can’t express our frustration, all the blame is shifted and heaped on us,” she said.

She mentioned that often the police take longer than usual to conclude an investigation in a simple case.

Mrs. Zubairu praised the Zazzau emirate for recognizing and celebrating her promotion and appointment.

According to her, her elevation to the Court of Appeal is a source of joy for the entire Zazzau Emirate and humanity.

She expressed her gratitude to the Almighty God for making her the first female in the Zazzau Emirate to be elevated to the rank of Justice of the Court of Appeal.

“As a child, it was not my wish to be a magistrate or a judge. What I wanted was to be the principal of a school.

“I aspired to be a principal because as a child, I desired to see that all children go to school to be educated.

“I never in my wildest imagination thought I would be a judge, but destiny led me to the judiciary,” she said.

Earlier, the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmad Bamalli, said, “the emirate was proud of Justice Zubairu as the first female from the emirate to attain such a height in the judiciary.

“The emir encouraged the celebrant to be a good ambassador of the emirate by exhibiting a high sense of honesty and professionalism in her endeavors.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force Committee on Prison Decongestion and former FCT Chief Judge, Justice Ishaq Bello, urged young judges to embrace the culture of hard work and dedication to excel.

Mr. Bello, while congratulating Justice Mrs. Zubairu, advised her to adhere to the ethics of the profession for effective service delivery.
