In a statement issued today, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, addressed concerns about varying prices across different market locations as they prepare to reopen this Sunday, following their debut on March 17.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu introduced these special markets, named “Ounje Eko,” as part of broader efforts to mitigate the economic impact on Lagos residents.
The initiative received mixed reactions during its inaugural Sunday, prompting discussions about pricing and logistical arrangements.
Designed to make essential items more affordable, the markets offer discounts on various foodstuffs such as rice, beans, garlic, bread, eggs, tomatoes, peppers, and onions.
Operated with oversight from government officials, youth volunteers, and private-sector payment providers, the markets aim for seamless transactions and accessibility.
Omotosho reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving livelihoods and emphasized the significance of the “Ounje Eko” initiative.
Additionally, he announced the inclusion of a new market site in Lekki Phase 1, broadening the program’s coverage to serve more residents. Information on market locations is available on official Lagos State Government social media channels.
The initial market launch drew significant crowds, with residents gathering early to take advantage of discounted prices. However, operational delays and logistical issues were reported, prompting calls for refinement from the public.
Furthermore, concerns about commodity prices in markets like Badagry have been acknowledged, leading the government to address these issues for a more equitable experience across all locations.
