Tony Aziegbemi, the Chairman of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, voiced these concerns during a Friday press briefing. He described the incident as a dangerous threat to democracy in Edo State.

“This impeachment was carried out by individuals who are not legitimate councillors of Oredo Local Government,” Aziegbemi said. “It is an act of impersonation, and we view this as a direct assault on democracy.”

The PDP claims that the so-called councillors lack the legal authority to impeach Obaseki, further alleging that elected councillors are now in hiding after facing threats and attacks.

Aziegbemi called on security agencies to intervene swiftly, urging them to investigate the incident and provide protection for legitimate councillors.

He appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other opinion leaders to step in, describing the situation as an alarming precursor to dictatorship.

“How can impostors claim to have impeached elected officials who hold certificates of return?” Aziegbemi questioned. “This is an outright mockery of the democratic process.”

The PDP has called on President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector General of Police, and the Director-General of the State Security Service to urgently address the issue before it escalates.
