PDP Chieftain Fabiyi: Atiku Yet to Declare 2027 Ambition, Focused on Saving Nigeria

A prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oladimeji Fabiyi, has clarified that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has not officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027.

Fabiyi, who served as the Director of Support Groups for the PDP Presidential Campaign Council in the 2023 elections, explained that it is Nigerians themselves who are urging Atiku to return to the presidential race, not Atiku making such moves on his own.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Fabiyi emphasized that Atiku is more committed to rescuing the nation from its current challenges and improving citizens’ welfare than seeking power for personal ambition.

“Atiku is focused on Nigeria and how to redeem and rescue the country. He has never said he’s going to run. It is people who are calling on him to contest. Right now, his main concern is reclaiming Nigeria and making it better,” Fabiyi said.

On PDP Crisis and Opposition Unity

Addressing issues within the PDP, Fabiyi distanced Atiku from the party’s internal crisis, stressing that the former Vice President is advocating for a united opposition front to defeat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election.

“He’s not involved in the ongoing PDP squabbles, though he remains a party member. But he understands that no single party can defeat an incumbent on its own. That’s why he’s reaching out, calling on opposition figures — be it El-Rufai, Peter Obi, or others — to join forces and rescue Nigeria,” Fabiyi noted.

Atiku’s Age Not a Barrier

On concerns about Atiku’s age, Fabiyi dismissed such arguments, asserting that age should not be a disqualifier for any aspirant.

“Age is irrelevant in this matter. Why should anyone say Atiku shouldn’t run? If you believe you can defeat him, face him at the polls,” he declared.
