Presidency Fires Back: Tinubu Not Plotting One-Party Rule – Opponents Fear His Popularity!”
As President Bola Tinubu’s administration marks its second year in office, the Presidency has strongly defended its track record, declaring that democracy in Nigeria remains robust and active.
In a statement reported by the media, the Presidency dismissed allegations that Tinubu is attempting to establish a one-party state, describing such suggestions as “utterly baseless.”
Speaking in a phone interview with Vanguard, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, highlighted key achievements of the administration and expressed optimism about the country’s direction.
Onanuga praised the administration’s economic reforms, particularly the stabilization of the exchange rate. He noted that the disparity between the official and parallel market exchange rates had been eliminated, a major milestone in Nigeria’s economic recovery.
“Two years down the line, we have several success stories. The reforms introduced in 2023 are paying off. We’ve managed to stabilize the naira and end the dual exchange rate regime, which once had a difference of ₦200 to ₦300. That’s now a thing of the past,” he said.
He also pointed to improvements in Nigeria’s balance of payments and trade figures, stating that they reflect progress under the current administration.
Addressing inflation, Onanuga admitted it remains a concern but emphasized that the worst appears to be over.
“Inflation, which has posed a challenge, is on a downward trend. We expect further decline in the coming weeks. Food prices — the main driver of inflation — have started to drop,” he noted.
He reassured citizens that the government remains focused on overcoming economic hurdles and expects more progress in the months ahead.
Onanuga also firmly defended the democratic space in Nigeria, rejecting claims that the administration is trying to silence political opponents.
“Democracy is alive and well. The opposition is very active — they’re holding meetings and planning events without interference. This clearly shows that democracy is thriving in Nigeria,” he added.
