The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered an immediate halt to the use of parks, gardens and other designated green areas in Abuja as car dealership outlets.

According to IREPORTER Online, the directive was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

The minister’s decision comes amid growing concerns over recurring flooding in parts of the Federal Capital City and calls for urgent action to tackle factors contributing to the problem.

Wike expressed concern over the conversion of spaces originally reserved for recreation and environmental purposes, including areas around Millennium Park, into car lots.

He directed relevant authorities to monitor such locations and ensure that all unauthorised activities are stopped.

The FCT Administration said the move forms part of measures being introduced to address flooding and improve environmental management across Abuja.

As part of the enforcement process, the minister ordered the establishment of a task force to ensure compliance with the directive and prevent further encroachment on designated green areas.

Wike also ordered an investigation into some civil servants allegedly involved in granting illegal approvals for the conversion of green areas into car dealership lots.

According to the statement, officials from departments including Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management and Urban Affairs have been summoned by the FCT Head of Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, to respond to issues surrounding the alleged approvals.

The minister warned that unauthorised use of public spaces would no longer be tolerated as the FCT Administration intensifies efforts to address environmental challenges and recurring flooding in the nation’s capital.
