Amos Akpan, a seasoned industry analyst, underscored the role of various entities in the aviation ecosystem, including aviation agencies, government bodies, fuel suppliers, telecom services, and even passengers themselves. He also highlighted external factors such as VIP movements, inclement weather, and subpar infrastructure from key agencies like the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) as key contributors to delays and cancellations.

Akpan emphasized that unless all stakeholders acknowledge their roles in the problem, the cycle of blame would continue without any real progress. “Each contributor must take responsibility,” he urged, calling on stakeholders like Immigration and aviation regulators to address inefficiencies. For example, Akpan pointed to the bottlenecks in aircraft leasing, issues with tax reporting, and poor data availability as barriers to improving flight operations.

“We need to improve service delivery across the board,” Akpan stressed, advocating for a more standardized approach to flight planning, with clear operations guidelines approved by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Chris Amokwu, another aviation expert, echoed these concerns, citing inadequate infrastructure at airports and airspace as major setbacks for the airlines. Amokwu suggested that categorizing and addressing the causes of flight delays would lead to more fairness in evaluating the airlines’ performance.

In a recent report, the NCAA revealed shocking statistics: Out of 10,804 flights operated by Nigerian airlines in September and October 2024, a staggering 5,415 flights, or 48%, were delayed or canceled. The agency has threatened to impose sanctions on airlines that fail to meet regulatory standards, under the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (NCARs) 2022.

As the aviation sector grapples with these challenges, experts are calling for better coordination and more transparency among regulators, operators, and customers to find lasting solutions. Only through collaboration can the industry overcome these persistent hurdles.
