Chelsea captain Reece James has admitted that he is yet to regain full match fitness as he prepares for the start of the new Premier League season.

According to Ireporter Online, James featured for 60 minutes as Chelsea secured a 3-1 victory over Real Sociedad in a pre-season friendly, using the game to build his fitness ahead of the club’s league opener against Fulham on August 24.

The 26-year-old defender returned to Chelsea following a short break after representing England at the 2026 World Cup. He said the limited time away from football meant he was pleased with his performance but still had some work to do before reaching peak condition.

James said the intense heat during the friendly made the contest physically demanding but described his appearance as an important step in his preparations for the new campaign.

The England international has endured several injury setbacks throughout his Chelsea career, which have restricted his playing time. However, he remains an important member of the squad when available.

James, who was appointed Chelsea captain in 2023, provides versatility across the defence and midfield and is regarded as one of the club’s key players.

With the Premier League season approaching, the defender is expected to use Chelsea’s remaining preparations to build his fitness and regain his best form before the competitive campaign begins.
