In a statement released on Friday, Rev. Fr. Raphael Ezeogu, Chancellor of the Nnewi Diocese, confirmed the tragic news, expressing that the attack was both shocking and devastating.

The statement remarked, “The Catholic Diocese of Nnewi sadly announces, yet with a strengthened faith, that our beloved Rev. Fr. Tobias Chukwujekwu Okonkwo passed away on December 26, 2024. He was shot dead by unidentified attackers at Ihiala, between 7 pm and 8 pm.

“Until his untimely death, Fr. Tobias, a pharmacist and native of Ekwulumili in Nnewi South Local Government Area, served as the manager of the Schools of Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala.

“We ask for your prayers and Holy Masses for his eternal rest. May Fr. Tobias find eternal joy in Paradise. Amen. Our condolences go out to those who mourn his loss. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.”

Born on August 11, 1984, Okonkwo was ordained a Catholic priest on July 11, 2015.

This incident underscores the deteriorating security situation in the southeastern geopolitical zone, particularly in Anambra State.

On Tuesday, gunmen abducted Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra House of Assembly, while traveling along Ugwunapampa road in Onitsha. Additionally, on December 7, Godwin Okpala, an Anglican bishop, was reported missing after failing to reach his destination in the Umuchu area along with his driver.
