The unions strongly condemned the unilateral increase, stating it disregards the economic hardships faced by Nigerians and violates legal provisions. They demanded an immediate reversal of the tariff hike and the controversial apartheid categorization into Bands, aiming to alleviate the burden on Nigerian workers and citizens.
Previously, the Organized Labour, including NLC, TUC, and affiliates, protested against the tariff increase at the offices of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) nationwide.
On April 3, NERC announced the tariff increase for Band A customers, raising the rate from N68 to N225 per kilowatt-hour, a 240% hike. This move, which removed the subsidy for Band A customers (15% of the 12.82 million power consumers in Nigeria), is expected to save the government N1.5 trillion and promises up to 20 hours of daily power supply for these customers.
