The accident claimed the lives of Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi and several high-ranking officials, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
The helicopter, which was carrying the president and the foreign minister, crashed in a mountainous and forested area of East Azerbaijan Province.
The crash was believed to have been caused by poor weather conditions, and the aviation team reported that the helicopter was completely burnt in the incident.
President Raisi, 63, a significant figure representing conservative and hardline factions in Iranian politics, had been in office for nearly three years and was expected to run for re-election next year.
However, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed the nation’s condolences over the incident.
“Nigeria is deeply saddened by this tragic event, which is a significant loss not only for the Iranian people but to the world at large,” the condolence message signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Eche Abu-Obe, read.
“The Federal Government extended its heartfelt sympathies to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the families of the deceased, and the entire Iranian nation.
“Nigeria stands in solidarity with Iran in these trying times and extends heartfelt condolences to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the families of the departed, and the people of Iran.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace.” the statement concluded.
