No Country Has Developed Through Democracy – Burkina Faso President

He argued that democracy is merely a byproduct of development, rather than its catalyst, insisting that a revolutionary transformation is necessary to secure the nation’s future. “Let me be clear, we are not in a democracy; we are in a popular, progressive revolution,” he stated. “A revolution is essential, and we are indeed undergoing one. The idea of democracy or limitless freedom of expression does not apply here. While one person may feel free to speak and act, others have the same rights, which can lead to societal chaos.”

Traoré remarked that it is “impossible to name a country that has developed through democracy,” contending that democracy is ultimately a result of development, not a precursor.

Since taking power in September 2022 after a coup that displaced interim President Paul-Henri Damiba, Traoré has drawn attention for his unorthodox policies and leadership style. His government is focused on self-sufficiency and national transformation, prioritizing revolutionary change over Western-style democracy.

One of his notable decisions was to decline an offer from Saudi Arabia to build 200 mosques in Burkina Faso, instead advocating for the Gulf nation to invest in infrastructure projects that would directly benefit the populace.
