Olu Jacobs Was A Consummate Actor” — Kanayo O. Kanayo Pays Tribute To Late Legend

Veteran Nigerian actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has paid tribute to the late screen icon Olu Jacobs, describing him as a consummate professional who maintained high standards and contributed immensely to the growth of Nollywood.

Speaking in an interview with BBC News Africa shared on Instagram on Friday, Kanayo recalled Jacobs’ discipline, punctuality and commitment to mentoring younger actors.

According to Kanayo, Olu Jacobs was known for taking his professional responsibilities seriously, particularly when it came to arriving on set on time.

“You wouldn’t tell an Olu Jacobs that call time is nine and he’s not there by 8.30,” he said.

The veteran actor also praised Jacobs’ ability to bring depth and originality to every role, noting that each new scene presented a fresh interpretation of his character.

“For those of us who were opportuned to be on set with him, he was just that consummate actor who played his part well. And every new scene came with a new interpretation,” Kanayo stated.

He further highlighted Jacobs’ willingness to guide younger performers, saying the late actor consistently encouraged them to improve their craft.

“Always willing to teach the younger ones on how they can be better actors. And God save you if you’re on set with Mr. Olu Jacobs and you’re not proving yourself to be an actor,” he added.

Recalling one of their joint projects, Kanayo said he worked with Jacobs on a film produced by Lancelot Imasuen in Benin. In the movie, Jacobs portrayed his father, a king, while Kanayo played the role of his son, the prince.

Reflecting on the actor’s passing, Kanayo expressed a wish that Jacobs had remained longer but acknowledged his lasting contributions to the Nigerian film industry.

“I would have wished that he stayed more. He has played his part and it’s time the Lord called him home,” he said.

Olu Jacobs died at the age of 84, with his family announcing his death on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
