Barcelona have reportedly received a significant boost in their pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Rodri after the Spain international indicated he is open to joining the Catalan club.

According to reports from Spanish media outlets, including Mundo Deportivo, Sport and Marca, the Ballon d’Or winner has expressed his willingness to begin negotiations with Barcelona after being convinced by head coach Hansi Flick’s long-term project.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also indicated that the midfielder is now closer than ever to a potential move to Camp Nou.

Mundo Deportivo reported that Rodri has informed Barcelona officials he is ready for talks, giving the club the confidence to explore a deal with Manchester City.

Although no agreement has been reached with either the player or the Premier League champions, Barcelona are said to believe securing Rodri’s approval represents the biggest breakthrough in their pursuit.

The reported development marks a notable shift, with Barcelona previously believing the midfielder favoured a move to rivals Real Madrid. However, recent reports suggest Rodri has now prioritised a switch to the Blaugrana.

While reinforcing the attack remains Barcelona’s primary objective this summer, the opportunity to sign one of Europe’s most accomplished midfielders has prompted the club to intensify its interest.

Reports indicate that Real Madrid had valued a potential transfer at around €60 million, a figure considered challenging for Barcelona’s financial position. Nevertheless, the club is now exploring possible funding options following Rodri’s reported willingness to join.

Sport also claimed negotiations between Rodri’s representatives and Real Madrid collapsed over financial terms, paving the way for Barcelona to enter the race.

The report added that Barcelona initially made contact with the player’s camp after Frenkie de Jong suffered an injury but delayed further discussions until they received confirmation that Rodri genuinely wanted the move.

That confirmation has now reportedly been given, with the Spain international prepared to negotiate personal terms.

The transfer is expected to cost between €55 million and €70 million, with Manchester City believed to favour a fee closer to the upper end of that range. However, reports suggest there could be room for negotiation should Rodri formally request to leave the club.

The midfielder’s salary is also expected to be a major issue, as his Ballon d’Or success has strengthened his demand for a contract reflecting his status among the world’s elite players.

Discussions between Barcelona and Rodri’s representatives are reportedly ongoing, with growing optimism inside the club despite the absence of a formal offer to either the player or Manchester City.

Marca further reported that Rodri has communicated his desire to join Flick’s project, effectively ending speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.
