Telecom Users Breathe Easy: NCC Confirms No Hike In January
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has dismissed speculations suggesting a telecom tariff hike in January, confirming that there are no plans for such an increase. data-driven, and require significant evidence.
The rumors, the source claims, are likely fueled by certain telecom operators who are attempting to mislead the public. The NCC source, who requested anonymity, explained that for a tariff review to occur, the commission first needs approval from a management board, which has yet to be appointed by the President. After board approval, consultants would be engaged to study the proposed tariff changes, followed by stakeholder consultations to assess the economic impact.
“The review process is thorough, involving input from all sectors including researchers, legal experts, and telecom operators. A minimum of three months’ notice would be given before any tariff changes are implemented,” the source explained. “Given that none of these procedures have been initiated, the rumors of a tariff hike in January are purely speculative.”
The last tariff review occurred in 2013, and since then, telecom operators have been allowed to make individual adjustments within a regulated price framework. Despite the rising costs of fuel and other operational expenses, the source claims that operators have the flexibility to adjust their own rates without waiting for an official review.
“Operators are not charging the maximum rates set in the last review,” the source added. “They prefer to pass the responsibility for potential hikes onto the NCC, as they are aware that tariff increases would provoke public backlash.”
