Local residents in Sokoto’s border communities dismissed Tchiani’s claims, asserting there were no foreign military bases in the area. Community leaders, such as Alhaji Abubakar Yusufu of Illela Local Government Area, refuted the existence of a “Gaba forest” and emphasized the longstanding brotherly relationship between Niger and Nigeria. Yusufu and other locals reported that Nigerien military personnel, rather than foreigners, had been assisting with local security efforts.

Dr. Murtala Rufa’I, a security expert at Usmanu Danfodio University, also called out Tchiani’s accusations as false. His research along the Nigeria-Niger border found no evidence of a foreign military presence, particularly in the area Tchiani referenced. Rufa’I suggested that the allegations may stem from tensions surrounding recent attacks on oil pipelines by terrorists, a situation in which Tchiani allegedly sought to distract from internal issues, such as terrorism and growing economic crises in Niger.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, reaffirmed that Nigeria would not allow foreign military bases on its soil and would not support any such destabilizing activities. Diplomatic voices, including former Nigerian Ambassador Suleiman Dahiru, criticized Tchiani for making baseless accusations that could harm relations between the two countries.

In addition, other regional leaders, such as General Lassina Doumbia from Côte d’Ivoire, also dismissed Tchiani’s claims, urging Niger’s government to focus on internal security challenges rather than blaming neighboring nations.

As the situation unfolds, the growing mistrust between the Nigerian and Nigerien governments continues to raise concerns, with experts stressing the importance of preserving the historical ties and peace between the two nations.
