and take concrete actions in tackling these global challenges.
President Tinubu made the remarks during the summit’s opening session focused on the “Fight Against Hunger and Poverty,” held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In his address, he expressed Nigeria’s strong commitment to these issues and highlighted the country’s alignment with global initiatives aimed at combating hunger and poverty.
The full text of President Tinubu’s address is as follows:
“Your Excellency, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil,
“Your Excellencies, Heads of State and Government,
“Ladies and Gentlemen,
“It is a privilege to address this distinguished gathering of leaders at the G20 Summit in the vibrant and historic city of Rio de Janeiro. I extend my gratitude to the Government of Brazil for inviting Nigeria to participate as a guest country during Brazil’s presidency of the G20.
“As we focus on the critical issue of hunger, I commend Brazil for its leadership in launching the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. This bold initiative represents a major step toward addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing our world. It also sends a powerful message of solidarity to the most vulnerable populations globally.
“The creation of this alliance is a milestone in our collective efforts to combat hunger and poverty. Through collaboration among governments, international organizations, and civil society, this initiative offers an integrated approach that addresses both immediate needs and the structural causes of these issues.
“Ladies and Gentlemen,
“Brazil’s prioritization of hunger and poverty mirrors Nigeria’s economic policies. Upon assuming office in 2023, I introduced an 8-Point Agenda, where Priority 3 focuses on strengthening agriculture to ensure food security, and Priority 6 emphasizes the importance of education, health, and social investments as pillars for national development.
“Nigeria’s endorsement of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty marks a significant step forward in our efforts. This endorsement highlights our commitment to utilizing international cooperation and resources to support domestic strategies aimed at fostering inclusive growth and socio-economic development.
“Aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (ending poverty) and SDG 2 (achieving zero hunger), this collaboration offers an opportunity to accelerate progress toward these objectives. By working together with international partners, Nigeria seeks to leverage innovative solutions, best practices, and financial support to strengthen our efforts in the fight against poverty and hunger.
“As we look forward to the adoption of the Leader’s Declaration, I reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to working alongside G20 members, guest countries, international organizations, and civil society in addressing these challenges.
“I thank you for your attention.”
