Update: FCT Police Locate Mother Who Abandoned Her One-Day-Old Baby

Published

The FCT Police Command has located the mother of a one-day-old baby who was found abandoned by the roadside in Galadima, Abuja, on Monday, September 12.

According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the woman, identified as Soliat and originally from Oyo State, told police that she became pregnant after allegedly being raped by four men in Keffi, where she previously lived.

Soliat reportedly said she later moved to Abuja to stay with her brother but kept the pregnancy secret because she feared being rejected if he discovered her condition. She said she struggled with the pregnancy and was uncertain of the identity of the child’s biological father.

According to her account, after giving birth, she placed the newborn in a carton and left the baby by the roadside before hiding nearby. She said she watched as a passerby discovered the child and took the baby to the Galadima Police Station.

She also disclosed that she had previously attempted to terminate the pregnancy but was unsuccessful.

The woman was eventually identified after the police spokesperson publicised the case. Neighbours who were aware that she had been pregnant reportedly confronted her, and she subsequently admitted that the abandoned baby was hers.

The circumstances surrounding the abandonment are expected to be further investigated by the police.
