Amaechi Drops Bombshell: What I Told My Family About Fuel Subsidy Removal
Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed what he told his wife and children when they asked how he would have handled fuel subsidy removal differently if he had been elected president.
Amaechi, speaking at a two-day event themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathway to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” acknowledged that subsidy removal was inevitable but criticized the timing and level of preparedness of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“I Wouldn’t Remove Subsidy Without Social Housing” – Amaechi
Amaechi disclosed that he told his family he would have removed the subsidy but only after implementing social housing projects to cushion the impact on Nigerians.
“There is no president who wouldn’t have removed the subsidy, but the question is: was the Tinubu government prepared? My wife and children asked me what I would have done differently, and I told them I wouldn’t remove it without social housing,” he said.
According to him, savings from subsidy removal and Naira devaluation could have been directed into building between 200,000 to 300,000 houses, providing jobs and improving living conditions.
“If you build between 200,000 and 300,000 houses across the states, how many jobs do you create? At least 300,000 bricklayers, 300,000 carpenters, and 300,000 plumbers would be engaged. That’s money in the hands of the people,” Amaechi added.
“Nigeria’s Middle Class Has Disappeared”
He also lamented the growing wealth gap in Nigeria, stating that the last functional middle class existed under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
“Now, you are either rich or poor—there is no middle class. If social housing and investments in agriculture had been implemented alongside subsidy removal, Nigerians wouldn’t be feeling the hardship as much as they are now,” he stressed.
Call for Proper Utilization of Subsidy Savings
Amaechi urged the government to focus subsidy savings on tangible projects that would improve citizens’ lives and provide economic opportunities rather than on vague policies.
