In response to a statement from APC Publicity Secretary Felix Morka regarding alleged threats against Obi, Tanko emphasized the need to take such matters seriously.

In an interview with Punch, Tanko warned that any attempt to arrest Peter Obi would have detrimental consequences for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He urged security agents to thoroughly investigate Morka’s threats rather than dismiss them. He stated that the Obidient Movement will not be silenced, urging the APC to rein in their spokesperson and avoid escalating tensions in the political environment.

“That is a threat. If they proceed with an arrest of Obi, it will backfire on their government,” he asserted. “In a democratic society, Obi has not violated anyone’s integrity or overstepped his bounds. We are not making unfounded accusations.”

Tanko went on to say that if the government engages in intimidation, the Nigerian populace is likely to respond negatively. “They must learn to accept accountability. If they have counterarguments to the issues we raise, they should provide factual evidence.”

He reiterated that Obi’s remarks concern all Nigerians and demonstrate the issues the government must confront. “What this indicates is that they intend to impose the intimidation and impunity we have accused them of, starting this January, simply because citizens are speaking out against poor governance.”

Tanko expressed unwavering support for Peter Obi and his vision for a fair and prosperous Nigeria. He urged Nigerians to oppose any drift toward authoritarianism and continue demanding accountability and justice.

He called on security forces not to ignore such threats as they have in the past, but rather to engage Morka for clarification. Additionally, he urged the ruling party to control its members and prevent actions that could escalate political unrest.

“The current government should promote constructive ideas that enhance our national discourse, not threats. They must demonstrate tolerance toward criticism.”

He concluded by noting that the level of impunity faced by the previous PDP government was worse than what is currently seen, yet the current administration faces less criticism. “Criticizing the government is essential for elevating our democratic standards. Nigerians have the constitutional right to address pertinent issues.
