British Rapper Sway DaSafo D!es At 44 Days After Celebrating Birthday

British-Ghanaian rapper and producer Sway DaSafo, born Derek Andrew Safo, has died at the age of 44, just days after celebrating his birthday.

According to reports, the news of his death was announced on Thursday, September 17, 2026, with tributes pouring in from the music industry and fans.

The MOBO Awards also confirmed his passing in a tribute shared on social media, describing Sway as an important figure in the history of the organisation and British hip-hop.

Sway made history at the 2005 MOBO Awards when he became the first unsigned artist to win the Best Hip-Hop Act category. He defeated established international acts including 50 Cent and The Game.

His victory came before the release of his debut album and was regarded as a significant moment for the UK hip-hop scene, which was still seeking wider recognition alongside American rap.

Born in North London to Ghanaian parents, Sway began his music career as part of groups including Phynix Crew and One before establishing himself as a solo artist.

He released his debut album, “This Is My Demo,” in 2006. The project received critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. His music catalogue also included the singles “Little Derek” and “Level Up,” with the latter becoming a Top 10 UK hit.
