Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has expressed the state’s readiness to establish a state police force, describing the initiative as a major step towards improving security and protecting residents.

According to Ireporter Online, Yusuf made the declaration on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Government House in Kano.

The governor said the proposed state police system would complement the Nigeria Police Force rather than compete with it, noting that both institutions would share the responsibility of safeguarding lives and property.

Yusuf stressed that effective collaboration between security agencies would improve intelligence gathering, enhance rapid response to threats and boost public confidence in law enforcement.

He stated that Kano possesses the required human resources, institutional structures and political commitment to operate a state police system once the necessary constitutional and legal frameworks are established.

According to the governor, the creation of state police would provide additional support to existing security structures and strengthen efforts to address security challenges across the country.

“We will support every legitimate initiative that strengthens Nigeria’s security architecture and creates a safer environment for citizens,” Yusuf said.

The governor also highlighted his administration’s commitment to tackling drug abuse and illicit trafficking through the newly inaugurated Inter-Agencies Task Force.

He explained that the task force was established to promote stronger cooperation among security agencies and relevant stakeholders in combating the growing challenges associated with drug-related crimes.

Yusuf urged members of the task force to carry out their duties with professionalism, discipline and integrity, noting that the fight against drug abuse requires sustained collaboration among all relevant institutions.

He added that a coordinated approach among security agencies remains essential to achieving lasting solutions to insecurity and social challenges in Kano State and beyond.
